The Generation Gap

Fast Rewind thirty years ago.  Claudia is 31.  Matthew is 4.  It is bed time.

Matthew:  "I don't want to go bed. I'm scared."

Me:  "Matthew, there is nothing to be afraid of.   I will leave the light on."

Matthew:  "But I am still scared!"

Me:  "Do you want me to shut the light off?"

Matthew:  "NO!"

Me:  "Then GO TO SLEEP!"

Last night one generation later.

Isaac:  "Grandma I am scared.  I don't want to go to bed.  Tell me the Rocket Ship Story"

Me:  " Once upon a time....."

Isaac:  "Grandma I am still scared.  I don't want to go to bed.  I want to build a block  house with the white blocks."

Me:  "Isaac it is 10:00 p.m.  Grandma is tired, go to sleep."

Isaac, as he turns on the tears:  "But I'm scared."

Grandma gets out of bed, Grandpa gets out of bed, Isaac gets out of bed.  Grandpa and Isaac build a house out of white blocks.  Grandma lays on the couch to 'watch them.'

Grandpa:  "Isaac, there is half the house, you will have to do the rest yourself."  Grandpa goes to bed.

Grandma wakes up at 10:45 to see the house complete and Isaac asleep on the other couch.  Isaac and Grandma go to bed.

Isaac:  "Grandma, will you tell me the oatmeal story."

Zzzz, Zzz, Zzzz.

P.S.  Max and Ava quit telling Isaac the ghost story of Anna the Hectagon !  Or did he just make that up?

  1. Sneakers, you are too dang cute! Next time Grandma and I should resort to the Matthew scenario above. Perhaps Grandma could throw in a wooden spoon to boot!
